IPL Hair Removal- What you need to know

What exactly is IPL and how does it work?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is a professional treatment that uses light to heat the hair follicle to a high temperature, cutting of the blood supply to the hair, this prevents future hair growth. It only works on hair that is in the growth stage, which makes up around 25% of the hair on your body at any given time. Dead hair can take up to three weeks before being shed by the skin, which is why having a series of IPL sessions is vital to optimal results. IPL works on various areas – including the face, underarms, legs or bikini line as long as the hair is dark in colour.

how does IPL work
The IPL emits an invisible light which penetrates the skin without damaging it. At the hair follicle, the light is absorbed by the pigments in the hair and is converted into heat. This heat will damage the follicle.

Why is timing important?

There are three stages of hair growth and IPL is only effective on hair in the first stage of growth (Anagen). ⁣⁣

The 3 stages are:⁣ Growth Phase (Anagen)⁣, Transition Phase (Catagen)⁣⁣, Resting Phase (Telogen)⁣. Anagen is the active growth phase of hair follicles. During this time the cells in the root of the hair divide rapidly, so the hair is growing and extending to the hair shaft. This is when the hair follicles are the most receptive to the laser light because they are rich in protein (keratin) and melanin.

IPL works by targeting the melanin (colour) in the hair. ⁣⁣As a general guide, your therapist will give you a treatment plan with appointments starting at every 4-6 weeks, for a minimum of 8-10 treatments to get the best results. We recommend diligence in your treatment schedule that will be planned with you and your skin therapist: This will ensure you see better results faster, and the process will be more cost-efficient.
